Royce Gracie, pronounced Hoyce Gracie, was born December 12, 1966 and is a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter. Gracie specializes in the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Gracie became enormously popular in the mid 1990s with a long successful string of submission victories over much larger opponents in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. It is noted that between 1993 and 1994, Gracie won 11 matches by submission and was the overall tournament winner of UFC 1, UFC2, UFC 4 and fought to a draw with champion Ken Shamrock in the UFC 5 superfight. The tremendous results by Gracie heavily contributed to the movement towards grappling, cross-training and MMA.
